Mphonde village is located in T/A Chiseka, 35km southeast from the Lilongwe city. In the village 50 people resides and among them about 30 are children under 18, which is 60 of whole population. There is no primary school so the children go to school in the other villages by walk. Most of children learn to work after graduation of primary school or even before the graduation. The electricity does not reach Mphonde village, so people cook food using branches of trees. There is no medical facility near the village the closest hospital is one hour drive from the village. People can get treatment from the governmental hospitals free of charge, but practically the villagers cannot be benefited or treated timely because of the shortage of medicines. There are 10 children who are supported by Good Neighbors sponsors, and the local volunteers are working actively to help sponsored children to get opportunities of education. For a long time the population in Mphonde village have been drawing water from Lilongwe river which is almost a kilometer away from the village, and the river is higly contaminated due to the number of people who is using it and some industrial companies along the river who dump their residues in it. The water from the river caused various water borne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, intesinal helminths and guinea worm. On August in this year Good Neighbors drilled a borehole in this village, which can be accessed by other surrounding villages like Maluwa, Mnolo and Miveti. The borehole provides clean water from 60-meter depth which local residents can use as drinking water. It is usable for the next 20 years. Mphonde villagers made a committee with ten people to take care of the borehole for themselves. Thanks to the installation of the borehole people`s lives have been changed a lot due to the accessibility of clean water and the reduction of water borne diseases. Your precious support enabled the village people to have access to clean and safe water for drinking and other domestic use. Thank you very much on behalf of all the Mphonde villagers. |
