Project Detail
Chizombwe village is located in T/A Chiseka, 35km southeast from the Lilongwe city. About 72 years ago, a family that had lived in Maunda village moved out from their village because they felt difficulties to raise their cows with the village people. They settled down on the land of present Chizombwe and currently 50 people stay in this village and among this about 30 people are children under 18 years old, which is 60 of whole population. They have no primary school in their village so the children go to nearby villages to attend the school. However, usually girls get married, have babies, and start farm work at the age of 1415. Boys earn money from farm works in other villages or go out to the city to be merchants. They work at restaurants, car repair shops, or small factories in the city, which takes one hour by car to get to. The electricity is not provided to Chizombwe village, so the people cook food with branches of trees. There is also no medical facility near the village, and the closest hospital is one-hour drive from the village. People can use the governmental hospitals free of charge, but practically the villagers cannot received the medical benefit or the timely treatment because of the shortage of medicines. There are 9 children who are supported by Good Neighbors sponsors, and the local volunteers are working actively to help sponsored children to get apportunities of education. The borehole in Chizombwe is developed using clean water from 60-meter depth which local residents can use as drinking water and for domestic use, and it is usable for the next 20 years. Before this borehole is developed, people had to get water from Lilongwe river, one killometer away from the village, which is higly contaminated with dumped wastewater from factories along the river. Mr. Rabson, one of the eldest in the village, said that it has been the first time for the village to have a borehole since 1939 and expressed his gratitude. Chizombwe villagers made a committee with ten people to take care of the borehole. People from nearby villages also come to use the borehole which means more than 150 people can be benefited. Your support provided clean and safe drinking water to 50 people in Chizombwe village and supported them to manage the borehole for themselves. Thank you very much on behalf of all the Chizombwe villagers.
