Project Summary
Improve Nuestra Realidad Primary School  environment through installing school fence and supporting school supplies
Budget 13,000 USD

Goal

Through the project, we would like to install a new school fence and support school resources.

Background

Guatemala is a typical family-centered society where most families are comprised of grandparents, parents and an average of three children. Although they are interested in children education, most Guatemalans believe that it is difficult to educate their children properly with the current public education system. The public primary schools offer only morning classes from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. as they do not require tuition fees. Students have to prepare their uniforms, registration fee (once a year), snack fee, school requisite, etc. The government supplies only one teacher’s salary and one textbook, reflecting the limited support that the education system currently has in place.

Good Neighbors began research for the school upon local request. Nuestra Realidad Elementary School was started by parents who were not able to send their children to other schools from the lack of space. However, the school, which is built from thin sheet metal, is also in a difficult situation due to their lack of resources and failing school fence, which is increasingly becoming a safety hazard. The school also has no electricity and is very small.

Good Neighbors is constructing a school fence and plans to provide school facilities and books to help students grow healthy physically and mentally
