Nuestra Realidad Fence Project Completed

James Hayes

Good Neighbors Guatemala is pleased to announce the completion of the fence around the Nuestra Realidad Elementary School. Good Neighbors and the local Guatemala community are grateful for the generosity of Monoprice, Inc in making this into a reality.

This school sits at the base of a ledge; one that threatens to collapse on the school below. To protect the school and its precious students, a fence was planned, erected, and finished. Now, the school is protected from mudslides, or other similar collapses of the ground above. Now, the children of the school can focus on learning without the fear to their physical safety.

GN Chad Celebrates the opening of its Kalawa School

Geunsun Park
GN Chad Director

Hello.
My name is Geun Sun Park and I am currently serving as the Good Neighbors Chad Division Director.

Today the Chad Division had its School Completion Ceremony in Kalawa. We had 2 classrooms built which cost $20,000 (under the current exchange rate this figure has jumped to  $25,000.)

We decided to throw a party. It started out as a small party with the Good Neighbors staff, some villagers and the construction company staff. Food and drinks were prepared. As the party continued more and more people participated and we had a great time together. Even a reporter from a radio station came to cover the ceremony. I was worried about my awkward French pronunciation, but it turned out fine. Bearing in mind the community’s concern that the need for mosquito nets is greater than the need for school supplies, we provided them with mosquito nets to prevent Malaria during the rainy season.

Sri Lanka Update May 2009

James Hayes

Sri Lanka has been shaken by a recent series of events, culminating in the end of a 25 year old civil war. With the death of the LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, the Sri Lankan government finally declared the end to its decades old civil war. As the government seizes control across the country, NPOs and NGOs eagerly anticipate the opportunity to move in and fill the needs of the general populace. However, the Sri Lankan government has currently restricted UN relief agencies from providing aid.

Even before this recent extraordinary turn of events, the conditions between the government and international agencies remained tense. Discord arose as representatives from other countries voiced concerns about the growing humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka; contrasting the government's stance that every possible measure has been taken to provide the aid needed for what are known as Internally Displaced Persons. Emergency relief projects are carried out under the control of the government with a limited, few aid agencies given direct access to these people.

As I landed in South Korea from Nepal, approaching Youngam-ri, I was overwhelmed with passion, energy, and excitement for the new opportunity GNI had provided me. I was one of the many participants from 15 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America participating in the Canaan Farmers School. I was eager to explore my curiosity of the Canaan School.
