Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases

Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases

Target 8: By 2015, stop and prevent the incidence of malaria and other major diseases

GN has driven Healthcare projects in 2 categories. First, it is using hospitals & clinics to provide the impoverished residents with medical treatment service at a minimum fee, or free of charge and to carry out health and sanitation education as a preventive measure.

In Afghanistan, from the beginning in 2004, GN realized that the optimal project was to start health related projects.  GN started by operating the Kabul Ultrasound Diagnosis Clinic, Kabul 3 Clinics, and the Ibnisina Emergency Hospital (over 250 beds), as a way to give the opportunity to prolong the lives and health of the people.  For the Kabul 3 clinics and Ibnisina Emergency Hospital, about $380,335 has been invested with the funds donated by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), for over 122,800 people. Through the Kabul Ultrasound Diagnosis Clinic, 23,222 people were diagnosed for a nominal fee or free of charge.

Secondly, GN has been working on goal 6 by offering medical supplies to prevent the spread of malaria, parasites, and AIDS, caused by a poor environment, by improving the health and sanitation environment along with executing epidemiological examinations, preventive education, and medical treatment.  In Rwanda, GN operated the Remera-Rukoma Hospital to protect the community from malaria.  Over 71,731 people were treated by medical staff in the hospital.  GN has operated the hospital with $61,241 for 3 years since 2004 and supported medical equipments, distributing medicines for Malaria patients and buying ambulances, generators, etc.

One of GN’s most successful projects is the “Korea-Tanzania collaborative project on health promotion through parasite control among school children in Tanzania” This is a 5-year-long project. GN has recruited an expert team consisting of Korean university faculty members of college of medicine. They have visited Tanzania twice a year since 2005, and have implemented research and parasite prevention projects with Tanzanian officials of the ministry of Health for 18 elementary school, impacting 2,867 children in the rural and remote areas such as Tanga, Dar es salaam, Lushoto, Mbulu etc. They have implemented anthropometric measurements, physical exam for anomalies and spleen index, urine test for schistosomiasis, stool examination for STH, filariasis card immunotest, and blood hemoglobin measure for anemia. Most importantly, they have achieved siGNficant progress during their 3-times visits. They discovered tapeworms from pork, not only in Tanzania but in the entire Southern Africa region.

In Egypt, GN applies a very effective strategy called “CHE (Community Health Education)” Just as the name of this strategy implies, GN has educated the local people about health related matters through meetings and workshops. People who had ever participated in the health education course immediately referred it to their family members and friends. Poor people have started to get back their rights to health through this project. 5,218 community people had a benefit from this project since 2005.

For people in the Korogocho region which means a ‘garbage dump’ in Swahili language, GN implemented community health projects to provide medical services to 3,740 people in 2005 and supported $49,920 for providing medical services to 11,000 people in 2006 through GN clinic, health education, AIDS prevention and supporting nutritious meals.

Moreover GN has built Jungsung and Daedonggang pharmaceutical factories to effectively provide basic medicines such as antibiotics for children and other community people who are suffering from diseases in severe medical conditions. GN also renovated 2 hospitals and provided medical care equipment for diagnosis, treatment, research and experiment, beds and its consumable medicines, raw material etc. to enlarge the opportunities for access to medical services. GN has supported the health system of North Korea financially ($4,553,230, from 2001 to 2004) and technically (Dispatching pharmaceutical experts) to reach this 6th goal.
