Here's what we're up to in Bangladesh:
Child Development
Telegu Child Home
 Telegu Child Home
The Telegu Child Home started in January of 1996,right when we first arrived in Bangladesh making it one of the oldest projects with Good Neighbors. We offer comprehensive care service, including medical care, meal services, and supplementary education to the 50 children (31 elementary school students and 19 middle school students) who are in tribes that are often marginalized, such as the Gelegu tribe that works in tea farms in the north-eastern part of Bangladesh.
Mirpur, Gulshan Mother & Baby Care Center
Mirpur, Gulshan Mother & Baby Care Center
In the capital city of Bangladesh, the Dacha district is in desperate need for a baby care center that supports women who work in factories, as the sewing industry is growing quickly. Begun in February 1997, Good Neighbors operates 11 Mother and Baby Care centers in Mirpur and Gulshan which are the slums of Dacha. Our care centers provide care for 500 impoverished babies. We also provide health education and medical care to the 1000 poor mothers and their babies. Good Neighbors also provides prenatal care education, counseling service, and assisting child birth expenses to 700 poor pregnant women. The center also enables these women to increase their income by providing vocational training, including sewing classes to about 700 mothers.
Bhatara School
Good Neighbors overtook operations at an elementary school in Bhatara that was nearly closed. We started the Bhatara School in 1997 with the purpose of providing an adequate education to local poor children. Most of the 350 elementary school students and the 125 middle school students are from impoverished families. Among these students, we choose 100 students and offer them a scholarship every month. Besides education, students also receive comprehensive care services through programs such as meal services, regular check-ups, sports days, and school picnics. Good Neighbors also provides computer classes to those 125 middle school students to prepare them for the future.
Mirpur School
Mirpur School is a project started by Good Neighbors to combat the shortage of education facilities at Mirpur, a densely populated district. We provide various care services including education, meal services, and medical care for the 280 elementary school students and 20 middle school students. We had learned much from operating school in the Bhatara and Ghatail region. We are also promoting comprehensive family development at Mirpur by educating parents about the proper method of educating children and family development.
Community Development
Sirajgonj Project
Good Neighbors started emergency services in 1996 when the region suffered enormous damage from heavy floods in Sirajgonj, the north-western part of Dacha. Once the emergency services ceased, reconstruction began, converting our operations into the Sirajgonj Development project since 1997. Currently we operate a kindergarten for 150 preschoolers and provide regular medical care to 1,500 partients. Additionally, we also provide computer classes, sewing classes, and farming technology classes to residents. We also operate a microcredit loan project, a cow lending project, a chicken farm, and a fishery to enable families to increase their income.
Ghatail Project
 Ghatail Project
Good Neighbors has been operating in the agricultural district of Ghatail since 1998. Ghatail is located northwest of Dacha and consists mostly of poor farmers and children. We aid 350 local elementary school students and 100 middle school students by providing not only a formal education, but also through meal services, medical care, and sports events. We assist 500 local parents in creating good family environments that help children grow up properly by educating parents about child education and family development. In addition, we provide computer classes and foreign language classes to local teenagers to strengthen their skills and assist them in their search for work.
Shakhipur Project
Our project in the Shakhipur community is one of the new projects that Good Neighbors began in January 2007 in the poor farm district located north of Dacha. We provide a comprehensive care service that includes meal services, medical care, and elementary school education to 200 children. We began providing computer education to fifteen local teenagers as a part of developing projects to help local residents increase their long term income.
Meherpur Project
 Meherpur Project
Meherpur, one of the poorest areas in Bangladesh, is situated in the western part of Dacha and the border of India. When we started the project in February 2008, the education conditions were very poor; each teacher had 100 students. The agricultural industry was the only existing local industry, causing serious economic and employment problems. Good Neighbors has in place a comprehensive, long-term strategy to develop the community. We are working to improve the quality and quantity of education by providing supplementary education to children and special seminars for local teachers. We are also working to reinvigorate the local economy by operating micro-credit programs for the gardening industry.
