One Dollar Challenge: Tanzania

Outline

Project Name One Dollar Challenge
Project Country Tanzania
Project Target 1,000 children
Project Summary
Provide anti-parasitic medication to children in Tanzania
Budget 500 USD

Goal

To provide anti-parasitic medication to 1,000 children in the Mwanza region of Tanzania.

Background

Parasites can cause a number of health problems ranging from fever, diarrhea, bloody stool, malnutrition, anemia, blindness, mental illnesses, to even death. Although parasites are easily cured, many children suffer and die due to the lack of preventative knowledge and medicine. Constant examination and medication is desperate needed as most of the children are exposed to an easily contaminated environment.

The Tanzania Parasite Research Team consists of four professors and assists in parasite infection examinations and medications to three regions: Korogwe, Lushoto, and Bulu. 40% of residents are infected by parasites. Good Neighbors also dispatched the team to Tanga, Arusha, and Daressalaam.

We performed parasite examinations to 3,534 elementary school students and community residents in 2005. We specifically were fortunate to help 346 residents who showed a positive reaction to the medication.

However, we'd like to continue offering examinations and medication to people to promote good health. Children are especially susceptible to parasites, which impedes their ability to study well in school. Each anti-parasitic kit costs less than 50 cents per child.
