At just 13 years old, Amal from Al-Nour Public School in Amman never imagined she would become a young leader for the environment. Like many children in her community, she grew up surrounded by challenges like water scarcity, littered streets, and limited awareness about how daily habits impact the planet.
Amal’s view of the environment shifted when her school launched an Environmental Club through Good Neighbors Jordan’s environmental awareness initiative. Curious and eager to learn, she joined the club without realizing how much it would transform her future.
Every week, Amal and her classmates attended fun, hands-on workshops led by trained teachers. They learned about climate change, recycling, waste management, and water conservation. Through activities like tree planting, waste sorting, and cleanup drives, Amal began to see how small actions could create real change.
Her favorite project was the “Recycling for a Greener Future” campaign. Together with her peers, Amal helped install recycling bins across the school and led awareness sessions to teach other students how to separate waste. Speaking in front of her classmates was intimidating at first, but over time, Amal became a confident young leader and communicator.
I never thought I could make a difference. Now I know that even small actions, like recycling or saving water, can create big changes. I feel proud to be part of something that helps my school, my family, and the environment.
— Amal
The lessons Amal learned didn’t stop at school. She brought them home and taught her family about conserving water like fixing leaks, collecting rainwater for cleaning, and reusing wastewater to water plants. Her younger siblings joined her efforts, and soon, their household became a small model of sustainability in the neighborhood.
Through her leadership, Amal inspired not only her peers but also her community. They became part of the growing movement of young environmental advocates across Jordan who are learning, acting, and leading change together.
Good Neighbors Jordan’s initiative was designed to educate and empower children like Amal to take action against environmental challenges. The initiative reached 1,400 students across Jordan’s middle and northern regions through school-based activities focused on climate change, waste management, cleanliness, and sanitation.
In collaboration with 24 student parliaments, the program led awareness campaigns, recycling initiatives, and school sanitation projects. These efforts cultivated environmental responsibility and teamwork among students, teachers, and families.
Beyond school activities, the initiative created a ripple effect throughout communities:
Through these efforts, behavioral norms began to shift. Students and families started conserving water, sorting waste, and reducing plastic use.
Good Neighbors Jordan continues to nurture environmental awareness among students, teachers, and communities, helping build resilience against climate change and promoting sustainable habits that last a lifetime.
