Good Neighbors Cameroon

Good Neighbors established its field office in Cameroon on December 15, 2014, to ensure that boys and girls of all ages are protected against violence, abuse, and marginalization. This was amidst the humanitarian crises in the country caused by insecurity and violence in the neighboring Central African Republic and the influx of refugees from Northern Nigeria. In this regard, Good Neighbors Cameroon has prioritized protecting children and their rights, as they are the most vulnerable in this fragile context.

The first field initiative began in 2015 for rural community development and was later extended to urban areas, including the Centre and South Regions, in 2016. In a significant move to address the health needs of some communities in the Centre Region, a project on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD), funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), became operational in 2019. Additionally, two new community development projects were initiated in the rural areas of the Far North Region of Cameroon in 2022 and 2024.

Currently, Good Neighbors Cameroon is implementing four community development projects with nine community-level committees to strengthen the social and economic capacities of children, their families, and the community as a whole, with the ultimate goal of building a foundation for their self-reliance. Similarly, Good Neighbors Cameroon has partnered with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), Global Affairs Canada (GAC), and KIA Motors to bring hope for an equitable, self-reliant community for the Cameroonian child.

Our Actions

To achieve a sustainable, self-reliant society, Good Neighbors Cameroon implements community-initiated projects that promote child rights and well-being, focusing on the following areas:

  • Child Protection: We work to create friendly environments where child rights are known and respected. Our intervention focuses on advocacy campaigns on child rights to ensure that all children are protected from all forms of violence and discrimination and fully enjoy their rights to identification and a healthy family life.
  • Education: We support children in project sites to enjoy the right to education. Our specific actions include improving access to and quality of education for all children in our project sites. This is done through the creation of learning outposts in areas with no schools and supporting existing schools with adequate infrastructure, equipment, didactic materials, and teacher capacity building.
  • Health: We support children in exercising their rights to access quality basic health care services. Our initiatives include creating and equipping health outposts in communities and training Community Health Workers. We support national health programs in the fight against specific diseases, especially Neglected Tropical Diseases currently affecting the well-being of children in Cameroon. This is achieved through practical medical support and the improvement of water and sanitation to enhance health outcomes.
  • Income generation: We support people in achieving economic empowerment through solidarity and cooperation. Good Neighbors Cameroon has adopted the strategy of empowering community members with the technical and financial means to resolve their challenges. Value is created through investments in the income-generating activities of socio-economic organizations. In turn, these organizations contribute a small percentage of their profits to resolve community problems related to health, education, WASH, environment, and gender.
  • Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH): We support people in accessing safe water and sanitation services. Our specific actions include constructing boreholes and toilets in areas that lack water and sanitation facilities, such as schools, hospitals, and communities. This is accompanied by capacity-building sessions for the sustainable management of these water and sanitation facilities, as well as sensitization campaigns for improved hygiene practices.
  • Climate Change: Climate change is strongly combated through innovative approaches such as afforestation, agroforestry, and efficient community resource management. Our initiatives include creating awareness through sensitization campaigns on the effects of climate change, mitigation strategies, and introducing various approaches to combat climate change.

Our actions in communities strongly align with Cameroon’s National Development Strategy and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In total, we have contributed to 10 SDGs, with the highest contributions to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger).
