Good Neighbors set up a field office in Niger in 2012 with an official authorization from the Ministry of the Interior and Decentralization, initially to operate in the Hamdallaye commune, Tillabéry region. From the outset, Good Neighbors Niger recognized the urgent challenges facing this commune, including severe food insecurity, inadequate educational resources, and a lack of basic infrastructure. The majority of its villages were particularly affected, facing a scarcity of school meals, educational materials, and sufficient classroom space. Additionally, records from the Hamdallaye health centers highlighted significant issues with child malnutrition and poor living conditions for women.
In response to these challenges, Good Neighbors Niger has focused its efforts on comprehensive community development projects within the commune. Over the past decade, in partnership with local governments and through the collaboration with various ministries, we have launched initiatives spanning multiple sectors, including Health, Child Protection, Agriculture and Livestock, and Education. Our projects have facilitated the construction of educational facilities, provided essential school and health supplies, supported food distribution, and implemented nutrition programs to combat malnutrition.
Today, Good Neighbors Niger operates four major community development projects that impact over 22 villages. Our work continues to evolve, focusing on education, food assistance, health and nutrition, school meals, and broader social policy and advocacy. Each initiative is designed to align with the strategic goals of the Nigerien government, ensuring that our efforts contribute effectively to the sustainable development of the region.
