Good Neighbors International (Uganda)

Good Neighbors International Uganda, founded in 2014, is dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable communities in Uganda. Initially supporting 1,200 children in Eastern Uganda, the organization has significantly expanded its reach, now assisting over 7,500 children through four comprehensive community development projects.

Over the past nine years, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Good Neighbors has made remarkable progress in enhancing children’s lives. The organization has improved access to quality education, provided life skills training, and advocated for children’s rights. It has also bolstered community health systems and increased access to primary healthcare by constructing and refurbishing water and sanitation facilities. Furthermore, Good Neighbors has empowered over 10,000 vulnerable households with income-generating initiatives.

Currently, Good Neighbors operates in seven districts across Uganda, implementing long-term community development initiatives alongside single-year and multi-year projects addressing health, agriculture, and humanitarian needs. Our efforts are guided by a strategic approach, grounded in meticulously assessed long-term plans reviewed biennially, ensuring effective results-based management. Additionally, we maintain strong relationships with local and central government entities and various stakeholders to promote sustainable development.

Our Actions

We promote children’s rights and improve the living conditions of underserved communities in Uganda.

  • Education and Child Protection: We increase access to quality education, and life skills among school-going children, and promote community engagement in child protection. We support underserved children with school fees, school meals, health checkups, and scholastic materials. We also build and renovate school infrastructures like classroom blocks and toilets.
  • Health: We increase access to quality health services for vulnerable people at the community level. We support and empower existing community health structures, offering health checkup services, HIV testing and counseling, vaccinations, and micronutrient supplements, targeting pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, children under 5 years, and youths.
  • Water & Sanitation (WASH): We improve access to safe and clean water and enhance hygiene and sanitation standards within the community. We construct and renovate boreholes, establish water user committees, and conduct awareness campaigns on best hygiene and sanitation practices.
  • Social Economy: We enhance the livelihood standards of vulnerable households through income-generating activities. We encourage group work in the form of cooperatives, farmers’ groups, and village savings and loans associations. We also build the capacity of these groups, especially women and youths.
  • Advocacy: We empower the marginalized communities to advocate and amplify their voices. Through Child Clubs, we implement advocacy and policy awareness campaigns, equipping the general public, policymakers and stakeholders on the key social issues affecting the marginalized and vulnerable population, especially women and young girls.
  • Environment: We support people to live in sustainable environments. Through climate change responsive projects, we sensibilize community members on the advantages and ways of restoring forest cover while practicing climate-smart agriculture, targeting all community members and institutions including schools, churches, health centers and all households.
  • Humanitarian Emergency Relief: We strengthen the disaster-coping capacity of refugees and host communities. We strive to improve the living conditions of those affected by natural disasters and crises by distributing assorted items like food and basic supplies.

Our programs are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially and our overall efforts contributed to: SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
