Myanmar earthquake

Emergency Appeal
Impact Escalates, Urgent Aid Needed.

Last Updated: 10 April 2025

Situation Report

  • A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar on 28 March 2025 at 12:50 local time, with its epicenter located in North Myanmar.
  • 5,350 fatalities have been reported, 7,108 people have been injured, and 538 remain missing.
  • 17.2 million people have been affected, including 42,370 who have been displaced or evacuated in northern and eastern Myanmar.
  • At least 41,232 houses have been damaged, along with 167 hospitals and 1,828 schools.
  • Electricity is limited to four hours per day in Yangon, with no power outside the city. Damaged toilets and water systems are forcing people to defecate in the open, causing foul smells in the camps and putting women and girls at risk of hygiene issues.
  • Widespread damage, power and communication outages, and an influx of foreign aid workers expose women, children, and vulnerable groups to a high risk of harassment, exploitation, and abuse.
  • A temporary ceasefire is in place, with over 500,000 people returning to the north since 27 January 2025.
  • Thousands, including children, are living in damaged homes with limited access to food, water, and medical care.
  • Over one million children need mental health support, and gender-based violence is increasing due to prolonged distress.
  • 91% of the population is at risk of severe food insecurity (IPC phase 3), and 436,000 housing units have been destroyed or severely/partially damaged.
