RAPID RELIEF REACHED THOUSANDS AFFECTED BY FLOODS IN SRI LANKA

Between May 8 and May 15, 2026, persistent heavy rainfall triggered severe flash floods in the Puttalam District, affecting over 8,400 families. Good Neighbors Sri Lanka swiftly mobilized an emergency response, targeting the most vulnerable 3,662 families across the six most affected Grama Niladhari (GN) divisions.

The response reached 13,648 individuals from 3,662 families, with balanced gender representation across age groups. The project also supported government health systems through the donation of communicable disease prevention equipment to the Medical Officer of Health – Puttalam.

The project successfully delivered critical relief, including dry rations, safe drinking water, and disease prevention supplies directly to beneficiaries. In coordination with government authorities, and with the gracious participation of the District Secretary and Divisional Secretary, all distributions were completed.

Additionally, Good Neighbors Sri Lanka procured and handed over communicable disease prevention equipment to the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) – Puttalam to strengthen the government’s health response.

Despite logistical challenges posed by continuous rain and damaged access roads, the response was executed efficiently. A Post Distribution Monitoring (PDM) exercise confirmed that aid reached the intended affected population. The project successfully reduced immediate food insecurity and health risks among flood-affected communities in Puttalam.

The Grama Niladhari came to our house. He saw how we were living. He wrote our names down. He told us, 'You will get help.' I cried. I cried because someone finally saw our pain.

I saw Good Neighbors Sri Lanka people working in the rain. I saw the District Secretary come to us. I knew then we were not forgotten. That gave me hope.

When Good Neighbors Sri Lanka staff delivered my items because I couldn't walk, I felt human again. I felt that my life mattered. They gave me hope.

I cried because someone cared about me. Someone saw my hard life. Someone helped me. That means more to me than the food.
