Hygiene as a Lifeline: Supporting Earthquake-Affected Families in Kunar Province

Yousof, a resident of Nurgal District in Kunar Province, is a father of nine whose family was displaced after a powerful earthquake destroyed their home. Before the disaster, Yousof and his family lived independently in their own house and relied on limited resources to meet their daily needs. When the earthquake struck, their home collapsed completely, forcing the family to flee with only the clothes they were wearing.

After the disaster, Yousof and his family relocated to one of the temporary sites established for earthquake-affected households. Life in the camp presented new challenges, particularly the lack of basic hygiene materials. Like many displaced families, they had lost essential household items such as soap, water containers, and personal hygiene supplies, increasing health risks for the entire household.

During the emergency response, Yousof’s family was assessed and verified by the joint Good Neighbors Afghanistan and OCHR assessment team using agreed vulnerability criteria. Due to the complete loss of shelter, the large family size, and continued displacement, the household was identified as highly vulnerable and selected to receive emergency hygiene support.

Through the project, Yousof received a family hygiene kit designed to support the needs of a large household. The kit included soap for personal and laundry use, toothbrushes and toothpaste for adults and children, shampoo, towels, sanitary pads, cotton cloth, plastic buckets, jerry cans, a plastic mug, and soap cases. These items were provided to support daily hygiene, safe water handling, and household cleanliness.

Since receiving the hygiene kit, Yousof’s family has been able to improve their daily hygiene practices. Access to basic items has helped them maintain cleanliness, reduce health risks related to poor sanitation, and better protect their children in the camp environment.

Reflecting on the support, Yousof shared:

When the earthquake destroyed our home, we lost everything, including the basic items we needed to stay clean and healthy. Living in the camp was very difficult for my children. After receiving the hygiene kit, our daily life has improved. We can now wash properly, keep our water clean, and protect our children from sickness.

The assistance helped Yousof’s family address immediate hygiene needs while living in displacement. It also supported their ability to cope with difficult conditions as they await longer-term recovery solutions.

Good Neighbors believes on the importance of timely and targeted WASH assistance in emergency settings. Through collaboration with OCHR, hygiene support contributed to protecting health and supporting the well-being of earthquake-affected families in Kunar Province.
