Training for Impact: Good Neighbors Strengthens Global Emergency Response Capacity

As disasters become more frequent and severe, often worsened by climate change, the ability to respond quickly and effectively is more important than ever. To strengthen this global capacity, Good Neighbors Global Partnership Center convened the 2025 Global Emergency Response Training (ERT) in Bogor, Indonesia, from September 9–11, 2025.

The training gathered
28 participants from Good Neighbors country offices around the world, representing Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. These participants included program managers, child protection officers, health coordinators, MEAL specialists, and country directors — all united by the mission to protect and empower children in crisis.

Building Skills in Global Emergency Response Training

The three-day program combined lectures, workshops, and simulation exercises to equip participants with both technical expertise and compassionate approaches to emergency work. Training modules focused on:

  • Child Protection in Emergencies and the use of international minimum standards

  • Psychosocial Support Programs, helping children cope and recover

  • Child-Friendly Rapid Needs Assessments, including use of KOBO Toolbox and sex, age, and disability disaggregated data (SADD)

  • Communication in Emergencies, such as writing situation reports and capturing case stories

  • Coordination and Partnerships, aligning with UN cluster systems and local stakeholders

A highlight of the training was a full field simulation in a Community Development Project site, where participants practiced conducting assessments, coordinating with local partners, and distributing initial support. This hands-on exercise gave them practical experience in responding under real-world conditions.

Beyond Global Emergency Response Training: A Global Community of Practice

Beyond building technical skills, the ERT fostered a global network of Good Neighbors practitioners who will carry these lessons back to their country offices. Facilitated by GPC’s Humanitarian Operations Unit and supported by regional experts, the training emphasized three guiding principles:

  • Mobilize with Humanitarian Insight – listening to communities, especially children

  • Act with Resolve – taking timely and ethical action in emergencies

  • Serve with Competence and Compassion – delivering aid effectively while upholding dignity

Looking Ahead

The 2025 Global ERT is part of a broader effort under Vision 2030: Empowering People, Transforming Communities, ensuring that Good Neighbors staff worldwide are prepared to protect children and families when disasters strike.

With stronger, better-trained teams across our offices, Good Neighbors is investing in a future where emergency response is not only faster but also more child-centered, compassionate, and effective.
