Arun grew up in a family shaped by long-standing poverty in Rajapur, Nepal. Neither his grandparents nor his parents had the opportunity to attend school. For generations, the family relied on daily wage labor, earning just enough to survive. While education had never been part of their own lives, Arun’s parents quietly hoped their children might have a different future, believing that education could open new doors.
Arun was enrolled in school, but poverty followed him into the classroom. Basic school supplies were often out of reach. “I did not have the necessary stationery items,” he recalls. “There were days I went to school without a bag or a pen. It affected my studies, but I still wanted to learn.” Despite these challenges, Arun remained determined to continue his education.
In 2009, when Arun’s father learned about the child sponsorship program of Good Neighbors International Nepal. Through the program, Arun began receiving educational materials and school uniforms. With these basic needs met, school became a place of learning rather than stress. During this time, Arun began to clearly define his dream. He wanted to wear the uniform of a police officer and serve his community.
At the same time, Arun’s parents participated in training programs on agriculture and other income-generating activities. Slowly, the family’s situation began to stabilize. Life did not become easy overnight, but it became more manageable. With fewer worries at home, Arun was able to focus on his studies and improve his performance in school.
Arun passed the School Leaving Examination with a GPA of 2.10. He later completed Grade 12 with a GPA of 2.07 from Kalika Secondary School in Rajapur Municipality, Ward No. 1, Chanaura. More importantly, he never let go of his childhood dream.
After completing his studies, Arun applied for a position with the Nepal Police. When he was selected, it marked a moment his family had never imagined possible. Today, Arun serves in the Nepali Police Special Force in Tanahu district, showing that difficult circumstances do not have to define one’s future.

Reflecting on his journey, Arun says, “Without the support of Good Neighbors International Nepal, I could not have continued my education. My childhood dream might have ended, and I would likely be working as a daily wage laborer. I am deeply grateful for the support that helped change my life.”
