Return to Learning: Supporting Vy and her Schoolmates After the Kajiki Cyclone

Vy,  is a Grade 5 student at Xuan Yen Primary School in Tien Dien Commune, Ha Tinh Province. Like many students in her community, her schooling was disrupted after the Kajiki cyclone and the storm that followed caused severe damage across the province.

Strong winds and heavy rain tore off the roofs of all 14 classrooms in her school’s two-story building. Ceilings cracked and leaked, making the classrooms unsafe to use. School equipment and students’ books were damaged by rainwater.

With no usable classrooms, Vy and her classmates had to attend lessons in temporary spaces such as administrative offices and auxiliary rooms, where learning conditions were limited and safety was a concern.

“After the storm, our school and classrooms were heavily affected. Many desks and books were damaged,” Vy shared.

To help restore safe learning conditions, Good Neighbors implemented an intervention focused on repairing damaged infrastructure, replacing essential equipment, and supporting students who lost their learning materials during the storm.

468.7 square meters of roofing were replaced and repaired ceilings for the main classroom building, as well as 490.3 square meters of roofing for auxiliary facilities including the semi-boarding house and multipurpose areas.

To improve classroom learning, the school also received six 65-inch televisions, nine desktop computers for learning and administration use, and a speaker system for school activities.

For Vy and other students who lost their school supplies, the support made a direct difference. Seventeen students received replacement books and study materials, allowing them to continue their lessons without interruption.

We were very happy when Good Neighbors visited and brought learning equipment to our school. These gifts help us study better and remind us that there are people who care about students in our small rural area.

With classrooms restored and learning tools replaced, students have been able to return to a safer and more supportive school environment. For Vy, the repaired classrooms mean being able to focus on her studies again alongside her classmates.

For Good Neighbors, restoring education facilities after disasters supports not only school infrastructure, but also students’ ability to continue learning safely and consistently—especially in communities affected by repeated storms.
