Good Neighbors partners with International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to strengthen climate resilience

Seoul, May 21, 2024 – Good Neighbors International, the global organization for children’s rights, disclosed the establishment of a partnership with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) based in the Philippines, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This collaboration is aimed at bolstering climate resilience across the countries both organizations are working in.

The ceremonial signing was hosted on May 20th at the IRRI headquarters in Los Baños, Philippines, with notable attendees including Ms. Yvonne Pinto, Director General of IRRI, and Mr. Sun Kim, who oversees International Programs at Good Neighbors International.

As a pivotal institution in the global agricultural sector, IRRI’s mission is to elevate food security and combat hunger worldwide by focusing on the development of rice varieties that can withstand climatic challenges, alongside initiatives that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The newly forged alliance with Good Neighbors is set to empower the distribution of these resilient rice strains, promote sustainable farming practices, and support the management of agricultural activities within Community Development Projects (CDP) abroad over the forthcoming five years. This initiative will significantly advance the agricultural proficiency of local communities.

Mr. Sun Kim, the leader of International Programs Division at Good Neighbors International, emphasized the critical nature of climate-related disasters such as severe droughts and floods, which pose imminent risks to the sustenance of populations in affected nations. He assured that Good Neighbors, in collaboration with IRRI, will proactively execute projects to mitigate climate change impacts, thereby safeguarding children and communities globally from the adversities brought on by such crises.

Furthermore, Good Neighbors is engaged in comprehensive community development projects that address educational support, health, water and sanitation, income generation, and advocacy. These initiatives are integral to the organization’s mission to make the world a place without hunger and where people live in harmony.
