August 26 was a clear day. Not a drop of rain had fallen.
Then, in a single moment, a wall of water tore through Nuwakot and Gorkha in Nepal’s Himalayan foothills. Glacier ice and rock gave way upstream, sending water and debris down the valley, and within thirty minutes the river had risen roughly 9M.
This region knows this kind of disaster. Glacial lakes have burst here before, and a nearby area was hit the same way only last year. But this one arrived with no rain and no warning, and that is what made it so cruel. There was no time to move. Once again, families are watching the ground their lives were built on wash away.
The flood and the debris it carried swept away homes and entire neighbourhoods, and destroyed roads, bridges and hydropower stations. As of the afternoon of 30 August, more then 700+ people have died and 2000+ are still missing. Search and rescue continues. A lot of people are injured, and have been brought to safety.
Children lost parents and neighbours overnight. The rooms where they slept and the ground where they played are buried under mud and water. Right now there is not enough shelter, not enough food, and not enough clean water. Families need help to get through the days ahead.
