Rebuilding Stronger Filipino Communities After Typhoon Gaemi

Manila, August 18, 2024 – Good Neighbors Philippines has provided post-disaster relief and recovery interventions for the communities affected from Typhoon Gaemi to help them rebuild stronger.

Typhoon Gaemi, locally known as Carina, intensified by the Southwest Moonsoon, left severe damages and disruption to 299,344 families (1,319,467 individuals) in the Philippines, particularly in the Metro Manila. The disaster resulted in severe flooding, destructed houses, properties, and livelihoods, causing complex issues including food insecurity and health concerns. In response to this pressing situation, Good Neighbors Philippines has been present in the affected areas from the onset of the typhoon to the present.

Our Responses

According the post-disaster relief plan, Good Neighbors Philippines has distributed 15 kilos of rice to 3,345 households and conducted medical mission, providing essential medicines. Additionally, they continue the post-disaster recovery program with rebuilding totally destroyed houses of three families. They will support livelihood recovery for fisher folks by providing fishing gears. These interventions address the critical needs of the survivors holistically, including food security, health and nutrition, safety, and economic empowerment. Weeks after the disaster, Good Neighbors Philippines has continued to provide crucial support to the communities affected. As of August 15, below are the detailed information:
  • Sitio Bakal (Quezon City) and Sitio Ibayo (San Mateo, Rizal): 694 families with 15 kilos of rice; 287 individuals served during the Medical Mission
  • San Isidro and Southville (Rodriguez, Rizal): 1,586 families with 15 kilos of rice; 620 individuals served during the Medical Mission
  • Pugad, Tibaguin, Sagrada Familia (Hagonoy, Bulacan): 1,015 families with 15 kilos of rice; 733 individuals served during  the Medical Mission

Typhoon Gaemi highlights the severe impact of climate change to the Philippines, with more extensive and devastating disasters expected to affect the communities in the future. Thus, Good Neighbors Philippines remains committed not only to during-disaster response but also to disaster preparedness, anticipation, and resilience-building, minimizing negative and destructive impacts on their lives.

As all affected Filipino communities strive to recover stronger, Good Neighbors continues standing with the children and families until they are back to a better daily life.
