Manila, July 31, 2024 – Good Neighbors Philippines, a humanitarian and development non-governmental organization (NGO), has initiated an emergency response to address the severe damages caused by Super Typhoon Gaemi, locally referred to as Carina.
The typhoon, intensified by the Southwest Monsoon, has left 299,344 families (1,319,467 individuals) in critical condition, particularly in the National Capital Region and surrounding areas. The cyclone has resulted in extensive flooding, leading to the widespread destruction of houses, properties, livelihoods, and government facilities. The affected populations are encountering numerous challenges, including food insecurity and health issues.
The Philippine government has declared a state of calamity in Metro Manila and adjacent regions. This declaration comes after several days of continuous heavy rains and strong winds, which have resulted in the suspension of work and classes. Impassable roads have severely disrupted daily life, particularly impacting breadwinners who rely on irregular employment within the informal economy. People in the affected communities have been unable to work for nearly a week, leaving their families without means of survival and exacerbating health problems due to prolonged exposure to floodwaters.
In light of this crisis, Good Neighbors Philippines has commenced support for severely affected individuals in the following areas: Pugad, Tibaguin, Sagrada Familia, San Isidro, South Ville, and Sitio Bakal. Our relief efforts will concentrate on the distribution of rice to 3,345 households, the provision of medical check-ups for affected populations, the reconstruction of destroyed houses, and the facilitation of livelihood recovery in Pugad-Tibaguin through the provision of fishing tools.
Our objective is to offer the timeliest support to the communities impacted by Typhoon Gaemi and to enhance their recovery process. Good Neighbors is dedicated to assisting affected families in rebuilding their lives and restoring their livelihoods.
